Education should not be all about books and being locked to a desk for days on end. There is much talk of late about a rounded education and educating the whole person. This can be achieved in a number of ways. No one is saying that formalised book learning and lectures don’t play an incredibly important part in education, but education in the form of experience should not be discounted. Many further education establishments now seek other ways to distinguish between candidates than just exam results and life experience really counts.

Getting out there

Full-time education is largely a young person’s game and what better time is there in life to get out and enjoy the great outdoors whilst deepening learning experiences? Students often enjoy adventurous holidays and these can be a great learning experience. Anyone studying geography, history, geology or environmental studies and indeed a host of other subjects can get an enormous amount out of walking holidays. There is a variety of fascinating landscapes whilst having the added advantage of keeping fit and getting some exercise. Sometimes the best way of understanding an environment and its make-up is by actually experiencing it.

Activity holidays can give added value, especially for groups participating together. Camaraderie and team building can be very important lessons learned in adventurous activities. Looking after the group is a very worthwhile and rewarding experience, which can be a valuable life lesson to carry away long after the pulse has stopped racing. Of course, it should not be forgotten that adventurous holidays are enormous fun and that can be a boost to education in any case. Once the next semester starts, students feel rested and ready for the challenges of a new term.

Pocket pleasers

The great thing about holidaying outdoors is that enjoyable experiences and gorgeous countryside can usually be found close to home meaning that walking and activity holidays can be extremely good value. Apart from a sturdy pair of boots and some basic equipment all you need is a pair of legs to enjoy a walking holiday. There are a number of excellent publications on the market that offer suggestions for routes and tours in a number of different regions. These can be a good source of inspiration and also open up possibilities for destinations very close to home that might never have been considered.

Keeping fit

This type of holiday is by definition physical in its nature. Anyone thinking of a holiday of this kind should be sure that they are fit enough to enjoy it without causing themselves any health problems. One of the great things about walking is the beneficial exercise to be had. For those who are not sure whether a walking holiday is for them, why not try building up to it by walking every day and gradually extending the duration?

Be prepared

Embarking on more physical holidays without the right preparation is always a bad idea. For those who might be considering camping, make sure the tent you choose is up to the conditions you are heading into. A trip into the Scottish mountains might be lovely, but camping there in a cheap, flimsy tent will probably not be much fun. Similarly, going into a long trek wearing cheap or ill-fitting walking boots is a recipe for blisters and pain.

Gilbert writes regularly on walking holidays for a range of travel websites and blogs.

The popularity of mountain biking in the early years owes no small debt to the contribution played
by Canada. A sport which began south of the border soon spread north and then on around the
world. There is of course a very good reason for this; Canada has some of the best and most
spectacular terrain in the world for riding the trails. In this post we’ll point out a few of the best
locations if you drag yourself away from the Gambling site.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park

Whistler is the obvious place to start, a couple of hours drive north of Vancouver in British
Columbia. Whistler-Blackcomb is where the mountain biking happens – it’s a ski resort in the
winter but in 1998 it became a summer biking venue. Riders can make use of the chairlifts and
gondola to reach the higher sections of the park and from there they can access more than 250
kilometres of trails spread over almost 50 defined tracks. The high standard of trails mean Whistler
is often frequented by professional riders perfecting their technique. The Free Roulette back in Vancouver can wait until it gets dark.

Mont-Sainte-Anne

If Whistler is the east coast mountain biking haven, then Mont-Sainte-Anne could well be the west
coast alternative. With nearly 30 kilometres of downhill trails, 130 kilometres of cross country
and a dedicated freestyle zone, mountain bikers in the east should try and get here at least once a
year. Like Whistler, rides can make use of the ski lifts to reach the high points. Mont-Sainte-Anne
is situated in Quebec. When you’re done, check out these Roulette tips for playing.

Manitoba

Lastly a quick word about Manitiba and specifically the area around Winnepeg. We’ve been to the
far west and the far east but Manitoba is rigth in the middle and not short of a mountain bike trail or
two. A few of our favourites are the Birch Mountain Bike Trails about 120 kilometres south west
of Winnepeg, Brandon Hills which is about 200 kilometres east and the Riding Mountain National
Park around 300 kilometres north west of Winnepeg.

We all dream of the chance to visit a far away country for a luxury no-expenses spared adventure. For me, it would be the chance to explore the breathtaking beauty of Canada. There is a mountain of things to do in Canada whatever you may be in to, whether it’s a trip to the world-famous Niagara Falls, celebrating with the locals in Ottawa at one of their many festivals, or taking to the slopes at the Whistler Resort.

Here is a list of just a few things luxury travel in Canada has to offer:

Top 5 luxury travel tips for Canada

1. Niagara Falls is one of the most famous sights in the world. The breathtaking views are best experienced with a luxury helicopter tour, allowing you the opportunity to take in every picturesque moment.

2. An arctic safari is also a must. This is the modern safari, the safari for those who truly want to explore a new environment. With the ever-present threat of global warming arctic safaris have become increasingly popular as people take a glimpse of the natural beauty in Canada’s far north before the landscape changes. Seize the opportunity to glimpse some of the magnificent creatures the Arctic has to offer including the walrus, muskoxen, caribou, whales and the great white polar bear. A luxury safari is the perfect way to explore everything the far north has to offer.

3. There’s even the opportunity to sleep in a polar bear’s backyard! The Tundra Buggy Lodge is a hotel on wheels that allows for a truly unique Canadian adventure.

4. Any trip to Canada, be it luxury or otherwise, wouldn’t be complete without a glimpse of the mesmerizing Northern-Lights. This spectacle can be enjoyed by way of a dog-sledding excursion run by world dog-sledding champion Grant Beck.

5. There is also the option of taking in many of Canada’s incredible sights by cruise. Many of these incorporate the best of the cities with the captivating wildlife that Canada is famous for. Just imagine waking up to the sight of a polar bear cruising on an ice chunk, or a beluga whale basking in the morning sun before taking a ride in a horse-drawn carriage through the historic city of Quebec.

So, if like me you want something more than just a holiday, a luxury trip to Canada has to be the perfect choice.

The west coast of Canada is blessed with phenomenal some natural terrain, It is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast or just a sight to absorb the beauty. What we wanted to do is find where are the best mountains in Canada for skiing and snowboarding, and it really was a tough task.

So what we’ve done is share with you some of the most popular ski resorts in Canada. Every ski resort offers fantastically unique terrain, and winter sports are highly weather dependent. The list is in no partiular order (as that would be too hard to do…. they are all so great for many different reasons) I do have a favourite but i leave that to the end.

Here are some of the best Ski Resorts in Canada (In our opinion)

Whistler-Blackcomb, Whistler, British Columbia
Has been voted among the top destinations in North America by major ski magazines for a long time now, attracting over 2 million people annually. By many measures, Whistler-Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America with over 200 runs, 39 lifts and well over 8,000 acres of terrain.

Mount Washington, Courtney, British Columbia
At 1,000 metres above sea level it’s not as high as some of the mainland mountains, but Mount Washington is known for its views (360o panoramic views that will blow your mind) of mountain, ocean, islands and lakes. In January 2011 it received global attention as having the deepest snow pack in the world!

Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, Montreal, Quebec
Mont Tremblant Ski Resort is Eastern Canada’s best-known ski resort. It has an elevation of 875 metres, 654 acres of skiable terrain and 95 runs serviced by 14 state-of-the-art lifts.

Blue Mountain, Collingwood, Ontario
Although it is one of the smaller peaks in our list (it has only 720 feet of vertical) The Blue Mountain boasts 34 trails, which is the delight of many snowboarders. It spreads over a two-and-a-half-mile long ridge. The resort is about 90 minutes north of Toronto and it benefits from Lake Huron’s lake-effect snow.

Big White Ski Resort, Kelowna, British Columbia
Big White has positioned itself as a top ski destination in British Columbia, a great accomplishment considering its world class competition. Located about 45 minutes outside of Kelowna in central BC, Big White Ski Resort is famous for its champagne powder and endless glades. It’s become our second favourite ski mountain in BC next to Whistler-Blackcomb.

Marmot Basin, Jasper, Alberta
Marmot Basin offers 3,000 vertical feet of superb skiing and snowboarding. Surrounded by mountainous landscape that are just unbelievably breathtaking. Marmot Basin has 86 trails, 1,675 acres of park terrain and the highest base elevation of all Canadian ski areas at over 5,570 feet.

I have saved my favourit to last, It may not be the most popular, but for some reason i just cant get enough of this place.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Revelstoke, British Columbia
Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the only resort world-wide to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing from one village base. Revelstoke boasts North America’s highest lift-serviced vertical at 1,713 metres (5,620 ft), 3,121 acres of fall line skiing, high alpine bowls and 13 areas of gladed terrain. Skiers travel from around the world to sample its perfect powder, varied alpine terrain and quaint mountain community. How could you want anything else?

What do you think of our list? have we missed any? Let us know below…..

Consumer spending on holidays is unlikely to return to pre-recession levels until 2014-2015 in line with a pick-up in the economy, according to Mintel’s 2011 British Lifestyles survey.

Last year total expenditure on domestic and overseas holidays, excluding transport on trips abroad such as flights, dropped to a five-year low of £33.4 billion.

Domestic holidays accounted for 60% of 2010 holidays, the same as 2009, but overseas holidays made up more than 60% of total expenditure with £12 billion spent on UK trips and £21.3 billion on holidays abroad.

However, average holiday expenditure increased last year, in part due to increasing UK petrol prices. Just over three-quarters of UK holidays are taken by car.

Mintel’s report forecasts total holiday expenditure will rise gradually to £37 billion in 2015 – the same as it was in 2008.

Senior travel and tourism analyst Tom Rees said: “The economic situation continues to constrain spending with rising inflation, petrol costs and fuel and food bills going up. The recession may have officially ended but it certainly doesn’t feel that way to people making their holiday purchase decisions.”

The report surveyed 2,017 internet users aged over 16 to look at the impact of the economic slowdown on consumers. Almost half (45%) spent less on holidays in the 12 months to June 2011.

Holidays were rated as the third biggest area in which consumers had spent less, behind entertainment and leisure (54%) and food and takeaways (53%). Consumers were less likely to have cut spend on technology and communications, clothing and accessories, and home and garden.

Explore the great migration of wild beasts on an african safari travel in reality. AndBeyond provides you with the best luxury african safari’s.

The same poll found 23% would always or mainly priotise price over quality when it comes to buying holidays. “It is particularly interesting people are still willing to go for a bargain even if they do not know the brand,” added Rees.

Overall the number of holidays taken by UK consumers has continued to decrease with a significant drop from 99.2 million in 2009 to 93 million holidays in 2010. Overseas breaks are at their lowest level for more than a decade.

Despite the fall in the number of holidays, domestic holidays have maintained their share of the market. This is set to continue, said Rees, with consumer confidence at a 20 year low.

The domestic holiday trend could continue even when expenditure picks up because of other rising costs such as university tuition fees, he added. “I wonder if we are seeing a rebalancing in favour of domestic holidays more than we have done before. Are people getting used to a new financial reality?”

The survey also shows consumers no longer view holidays as a necessity; four in ten class holidays as a luxury and one in four as a necessary spend, based on a poll of 2,000 people.

The key to a good holiday is all in the planning. And thus the key to good planning is all in the packing! Having tried a variety of approaches to packing over the years, I feel well equipt to advise on such matters. First off, I will strongly advise against the last-minute method (you know- the one where you end up packing a delightful selection of mix and match bikini pieces and flip flops, but little in the way of actual clothing)! Yes, it is extremely important that in the dizzying anticipation of sunshine, you don’t lose your head (Tip 1)…

Tip 2: Choose a versatile colour palette- Now, as much as the term ‘colour palette’ may evoke images of paint colour swatches, it is also one that can be appropriately adapted to your wardrobe. When packing space is limited and paying excess baggage charges isn’t an option, it’s important get colour clever. Basically, you need a theme and you need to stick to it- that way you should get away with only packing two cardigans instead of the usual 10!

Tip 3: Invest in a good all-round pair of sandals- yes a carefully chosen pair of practical yet elegant footwear can go a long way to ensuring you have a happy holiday. You may think it’s asking a bit much to find a pair of shoes that will fare well at the beach, the sites, the shops, and a nice restaurant in the evening, but rest assured with a little pre-holiday time investment you WILL find your sole-mate sandals!

Tip 4: It’s all in the hair- When it comes to mastering the perfect beach- tousled look on those tresses it’s not always as easy as the mags make out. What about those of us who were born with the limpest and lifeless of hair? Hair that refuses to liven up, even with the aid of salty water and a Mediterranean breeze calls for extra help. And as it happens I think I may just have found my new hair-style crush- the Instyler rotating iron! It really does do everything a girl could ask. Having tirelessly, and unsuccessfully attempting to create glossy waves likened to those of Giselle with my hair straighteners, I thought I’d give the Instylers a go. As a result, the miracle-working rotating iron is now firmly on my list of holiday packing must-haves.

Tip 5: Layers- Finally, don’t be a fool- just because you’re going somewhere with a warm climate, that doesn’t mean the airport terminal climate is going to be equally as pleasant. There will almost definitely, wherever you’re going, be the need at some point for a comfy cardy! I recommend taking 3 or four thin over-layers that will allow for varying degrees of air-con strength!

I’d also quite like to explore the tunnels and shops under Montreal, I’m pretty sure it’s not that different to schlepping the underground, but the whole Subterranean walking to work or the shops definitely interests me.
