Bear Watching in British Columbia

With its beautiful scenery and majestic wildlife, British Columbia is one of the most breath-taking places you could visit anywhere on Earth.

There’s awe inspiring marine wildlife adventures and safaris you can undertake, seeing the largest sea mammals such as orca Killer Whales, Sperm Whales or Sea Lions and dolphin pods. But arguably best of all and most popular is the Grizzly Bear tours we’ve been on.

There’s no denying that British Columbia is prime bear watching territory, with the province the home of more than half of Canada’s grizzly bears, and a quarter of Canada’s black bears. It also boasts a unique inhabitant, that of the extremely rare  white Kermode bear or also known as the elusive “Spirit” bear.

Bear viewing in British Columbia can be undertaken in several ways. You can venture off by yourself, without a guide, but to ensure greater safety, successful viewings and therefore increase the enjoyment we would always recommend a specialist guide.

Throughout certain regions there are elevated viewing platforms that travellers can perch in to witness grizzly bears hunting for spawning salmon by pouncing on them and then devouring the meaty fish. Alternatively you can serene in a lake or riverboat and spy the water loving bears from the a safe viewpoint.

Whichever you choose, seeing a couple of cubs with their mother hunting for food or large males prowling their habitat is one of the most pleasing sites you can ever imagine. Watching the large mammals roam the forests and the river banks is truly awe-inspiring, and when you are touched by this most glorious of sights you will agree that the Grizzly Bear should be left in peace to grow and prosper.
